Art of Asana - Inverted Poses

“It is through the alignment of the body that I discovered the alignment of my mind, self and intelligence” –B.K.S. Iyengar: Light on Life.

When taught clearly, with simple instructions and effective demonstrations, what may have once felt impossible, will be accessible, joyful and fun. This workshop will focus on handstands, forearm stand and headstand. Students will leave with a clear understanding of what commonalities exist in all inversions and the risk factors that need to addressed. We will explore the component parts (parts of the body that need to be prepared and/or educated) to successfully practice going upside down. The poses that once made you feel fear and dread can actually create excitement and anticipation.

Students will gain an understanding and confidence of poses that may have seemed inaccessible. e will learn modifications and explore what parts of the body need to open and what parts need to be strengthened to work toward balancing.

Benefits of inversions:

  • Inversions are good for circulation: assist movement of lymph, work with gravity for venous return, reduce oedema.
  • Calm the mind and relieve stress.
  • Are invigorating.
  • Control digestion.
  • Can help prevent shrinking, reduce normal stress on spinal column.
  • Strengthen upper body.
  • They are fun!

This workshop is for yoga students with at least 6 months of yoga experience. It is also a great opportunity for yoga teachers to deepen their knowledge of the anatomical asana alignment and techniques to adjust the asanas for different body types and conditions.
